How To Change Units In Rhino For Mac

  • If you need a different unit, you can change the unit but let rhino scale the file. If you already are in your desired unit, you can also use 3D scale with the corresponding scale factor (0.1 in your case) and scale around the origin point. Or you can always reimport/open the file and use the correct unit when importing.
  • You can change the unit in Options - Doc Properties - Units to centimeters. A another good approach, is to model in one unit system and dimension in another. You can create a dimension style that has text that represents the part in centimeters, even thought the model unit is.
  • To use linetypes defined in another Rhino model Edit the linetype definition file linetypes1033.txt (for English). Note: Linetype files are located in Documents and Settings All Users Application Data McNeel.
  • In Mac Rhino the units would be in file SETTINGS, not Rhino PREFERENCES. There are no Layouts in Mac Rhino yet so you won’t find that. MichaelHackney March 2, 2015, 11:27pm.

First, if you want to get the maximum performance out of Rhino, Boot Camp is the way to go. Boot Camp lets you to install Windows on your Mac, essentially allowing you to turn on your computer and use Windows instead of Mac OS X. You don't have to get rid of Mac OS X; you can switch between the two every time you boot up.

Nick,

Unfortunately, there isn't currently a way to change the analysis units once they've been established.

You can explode the model to clear out the Scan&Solve data and join it back together to establish the new units. Of course you'll have to re-apply the restraints, loads and other settings.

Out of curiosity, if Scan&Solve would modify the analysis units to always match the Rhino units (scaling the loads into the new units), would this be acceptable behavior?

How

HI:

It sounds like Scan and Solve is missing a 'clear results' command which

clears the current analysis results without having to re-apply the loads, contraints

or other settings.

So you would clear the current analysis results.

Change the units

Then do a new analysis

Thx,

Bob

All,

Regarding 'clear results,' the [Purge] button on the Specify tab will clear solution results. It won't do anything for changes in units.

Try the latest version (1.4.1.8). It checks for a change in units in the Rhino document and prompts the user for guidance. It will also warn if unsupported length units are being used to model the geometry.

Thanks Michael. Since this is probably a rare occurrence it isn't necessary to have a feature for changing units.

Maybe a units item in the results tab and displaying the reaction forces will be enough to alert users to any inconsistencies. I only picked up on it when I checked the weight of the item. Those things are our human checks to see if it is being modelled and solved correctly, they're things that a computer can't really comprehend.

regards,

Nick.

In Windows there are two ways to get to this setting. Through the Rhino Options>Advanced Settings>Shaded but from the image above it doesn't look like there is an advanced option on there. So the Alternative is to go through the Viewport Title Menu with a right click and select Display Options. Does Mac have a similar feature?

On the image you posted above, the top one 'Background' is where on Windows you change the colour of the viewport background.

I had to look and the windows options are the same - I have mine set to white,

Backface settings are a Rhino display feature that allows you to easily identify a surface's normal direction.
